Stroke

Stroke is the third biggest cause of death in the UK and the largest single cause of severe disability. Each year more than 110,000 people in England will suffer from a stroke and this figure is set to rise significantly as the population ages.

In 2007 when the National Stroke Strategy was published, England was spending more on stroke care than any other country in Europe and getting worse outcomes.

The East Midlands Stroke Network was established at the end of 2008, to support a step change in quality of stroke services for patients in our area.

Networks in the NHS are changing: The East Midlands Cardiovascular Network in its current form will cease to exist as of March 31, 2013. Strategic clinical networks, overseen by the NHS Commissioning Board, are being established to take over the role and responsibilities of this Network. This website will not be updated after March 31, 2013.
